It can be taught explicitly through high expectations, feedback and the certainty of following through on what you say you will do.

How long does it take? Months for some Ss, seconds for others. Education is to better peoples lives, not to simply pass knowledge

I have learnt to perform for deadlines and procrastinate until performance time. I feel that this is as close as I’ll ever get to a work life balance...as long as I can cope with the stress of working to tight deadlines.

Formative assessment is important for teachers and with feedback, important for students too.
How much more powerful is it though when students self-assess and reflect on their own learning and articulate it? This is real student voice.

Back to back drawing makes me question our vocabulary, critical listening skills and clear messages to tell others. How many of our students struggle to understand us if our colleagues don’t understand directions to draw ‘simple’ shapes? #PanaConf18

@malcoad @geonz This is why Ss need to understand their number sense. I used that example in 240 characters. Knowing that 6 is the answer, how else can it be made up. Fluid use of number facts rather than filling out worksheets and remembering.

@geonz @malcoad Yes teaching number facts in a multi sensory approach is important. I think even with number facts, you must teach the what along with the why and how. What is the fact, how else can it be shown. Teaching how to use them is more important. Ie problem solving tasks, maths games.

@geonz @malcoad The Ss in my class with the most confidence have number sense. The deep understanding and fluency of numbers ie 4 + 2 = 5 + 1. This is where I argue that rote learning number facts is different to number sense. My Ss heads are stuck at recall - knowing not understanding.

I want to know:
Could my Ss share their thinking using Mathematical reasoning and accurate vocabulary?
-How much do I need to model this first? How important are word walls and explicit teaching of vocabulary in this process?

Can my Ss do multiplicative thinking without me?

We played with @SteveWyborney Splats yesterday and today. Ss loved subitising and exploring numbers. I found my own Splat at lawn bowls!

I asked Ss to show their thinking. Good first steps. Ss collaborated naturally and willingly made mistakes. Some volunteered thoughts.

@alstechs Thanks Amanda, try it and see what happens! My aim this term is to change the culture of thinking in my class. I want each child to see themselves as a learner, see that they can achieve relative success and rediscover a love for learning - that natural curiosity they once had.
