The Battle of Stalingrad, fought from July 1942 to February 1943, marked a decisive turning point on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. By late summer German forces of the Wehrmacht’s Sixth Army, supported by elements of the Fourth Panzer Army, were deeply engaged in brutal urban fighting inside Stalingrad, seeking to secure the city and cut Soviet access to the Volga River.

In November 1942, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a massive counter offensive aimed not at the heavily defended city itself but at the weaker Axis flanks held largely by Romanian units. Soviet armoured and infantry formations broke through these positions and rapidly advanced westwards. Near the city of Kalach on Don, Soviet pincers met, completing the encirclement of the German Sixth Army and trapping more than 250,000 Axis troops inside what became known as the Stalingrad pocket.

From that moment, the German situation deteriorated rapidly. H*tler forbade a breakout and promised that the encircled forces would be supplied by air. In reality, the Luftwaffe was incapable of delivering the vast quantities of food, ammunition, fuel and medical supplies required. Aircraft shortages, harsh winter weather, Soviet air attacks and the long distances involved meant that only a fraction of the needed supplies reached the pocket. Evacuation of the wounded was minimal, leaving thousands to suffer in freezing conditions with little treatment.

As the winter deepened, starvation, disease and exposure took a devastating toll. Soviet forces steadily tightened the noose, launching Operation Ring in January 1943 to crush the surrounded army. On 2 February 1943, the remaining German forces surrendered. The defeat destroyed an entire German field army, shattered the myth of German invincibility and shifted the strategic initiative permanently to the Soviet Union.
