Part 2: Study Guides imo take the focus off learning during all other activities. Why should Ss be engaged during everything else you have planned for a unit when all they really have to do is memorize the study guide at the end of the unit to do well?

Part 1: Another popular thing I dislike as a teacher are "Study Guides". If Ss realize your study guides have everything they need to "know" for the test you are imo encouraging Ss to play the "game" of school and Ss will just memorize the study guide and not focus on learning.

I know other teachers may dislike me for this but I tell my Ss not to "study" for my assessments. Why? To see what my Ss genuinely know so I can identify their strengths/weaknesses more accurately. I don't want to know what they shoved in their heads a day before the assessment.

Over the years I have truly come to understand this. My path went like this: Traditional Grading --> Standards Based Grading --> Standards Based Reflection/End of Semester Conference Grading. Each step had a positive influence on Student Learning/Growth AND OUR mental health.

The#2 change I want to see in schools is the elimination of "work" and "working. Students aren't "working" and they don't submit "work." They are "learning,", do "learning activities, and submit "evidence of learning." Disappointed to see "work" appear so often tonight. #sblchat

1/2: Today was a bittersweet moment. I had the pleasure of delivering yard signs and t-shirts to 17 CVHS seniors. Some students I knew, others I met for the first time but the looks on their faces when they came to the door wont be something I ever forget. #CVHS
