Today is 37 years since the Tiananmen Massacre

On this day in 1989, the Chinese Communist Party ordered the People's Liberation Army to open fire on its own citizens.

Peaceful pro-democracy students and workers who gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square demanding freedom, anti-corruption, and basic human rights were crushed under tanks and gunfire.

The protests began in mid-April 1989, triggered by the death of reformist leader Hu Yaobang. On May 13, students began a hunger strike. Martial law was declared on May 20, but protesters remained peaceful.

In the early hours of June 4, troops advanced with tanks and live ammunition. Soldiers fired on unarmed civilians blocking their path in the streets surrounding the square.

Hundreds to thousands were killed. Thousands more were imprisoned, tortured, or disappeared.

To this day, the Chinese government censors all mention of it, erases it from history books, and threatens anyone who remembers.

The big question in all of this is why were these messages between Darren Jones and Peter Mandelson not released on Monday alongside all the other Humble Address documents?

The Humble Address is clear that "electronic communications… between Lord Mandelson and ministers… during his time as Ambassador" must be released to Parliament - that is exactly what these messages between Darren Jones and Peter Mandelson are.

The Cabinet Office, which Darren Jones is in charge of, oversees this process, and it is beginning to look as though that department cannot be trusted to make politically sensitive decisions.

In my mind, we now need an independent third party, not subject to the pressures of the Government, to review this matter.

The most natural option would be for the National Audit Office to look at this. When I was chair of the Public Accounts Committee, the NAO had access to every single document in government no matter how highly classified.

The NAO could review the information and documents the Government holds and provide reassurance that the demands of the Humble Address are being properly complied with.

The NHF @Southwell_Races yesterday was worth 25% more than the same race in 2016. Over the same period the minimum wage cost for 21-25yo’s has risen by 83% and the cost of feed by approx 65%. These are core costs for trainers but don’t forget ERNIC, energy etc which have also risen exponentially. To an extent this is reflected in increased fees but poor returns is why Owner base is shrinking followed by the Training & Breeding industries.

Over the same time period the total income from the betting industry to racing (levy, media rights and sponsorship) is estimated to have risen from £220m to £425m (+£205m). Total prize money in 2016 was £137.6m and in 2025 was £195m (+£57.4m). Surely Prize Money should have risen in line with income from bookmakers?

The reality appears to be a shortfall of approx £150m which is why participants feel shortchanged and are wondering where all the money is going? (Figures not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but they tell the story of why we are where we are)

Using fake invoices, black-market banks, and illicit crypto, China’s wealthy are desperately smuggling up to $1 trillion out of the country to save their fortunes.

A Bloomberg report exposes the sheer panic of China’s elite, who moved a record-breaking $807 billion to $1 trillion overseas in 2025. This historic capital flight is fueled by mounting anxiety over a collapsing property market, a choking economy, and Beijing’s aggressive campaigns targeting private wealth. On paper, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange enforces a strict $50,000 annual transfer limit. In reality, the rich are deploying a sophisticated array of evasion tactics to render the CCP's financial walls completely useless.

The escape routes are as creative as they are desperate. Through a method called "smurfing," or "ants moving house," families pool dozens of individual $50,000 quotas to sneak massive funds past border controls. For larger fortunes, they rely on massive underground banking networks where domestic yuan is handed to a local facilitator and an equivalent payout is made offshore without the cash ever physically crossing the border. Others manipulate international commerce through fraudulent, inflated trade invoices, exploit luxury asset refund schemes in casinos, or bypass the traditional banking system entirely via $16.1 billion in illicit cryptocurrency transactions to funnel cash into global safe havens.

This massive exodus is the ultimate, silent vote of no confidence in the CCP’s economic future. Despite severe penalties, asset seizures, and the explicit threat of prison, China's elite would rather risk criminal prosecution than leave their life savings at the mercy of the state. By treating private success as a threat, Beijing has not stabilized its economy; it has simply guaranteed that its own citizens will stop at nothing to bleed it dry.
