Went to support 2 legendary music educators in Oakland tonight at their jazz band concert. Zach Pitt-Smith at Edna Brewer and Randy Porter at Roosevelt. Sad that with a looming strike, they won’t be in classes tomorrow with these amazing middle school students.

To summarize, neither of the resolutions brought forward tonight, on budget reductions and layoffs, was approved. So the board will need to come back with more budget proposals at some point if they still want to prioritize raises or other investments.

We also know that expensive tests and degrees put a barrier barrier to entering our profession that reinforces white supremacy and keeps our community members from serving our students. If you are looking for a good school, “highly qualified” staff is not a helpful metric.
