I few years ago I realized that I not only wasn’t really up on modern horror but as an aspiring writer that I should look into small presses who publish horror from beginning writers.
I was not doing well with finding new horror writers. I read about five books that just didn’t do it for me until now. Finally found something good, The Only Safe Place Left is the Dark by Warren Wagner from Ghoulish Books.
This novella is a character driven journey, and that’s the best thing to say about it and the most important for me.
Yes, it has its own zombie concepts. Yes it’s socially relevant. Yes, it’s about a gay man. Yes, it could be seen as a metaphor. Yes, it has a message, but the main character isn’t flying it like a flag.
Also, because I read a lot of stuff even self published work it has to be said. The grammar and mechanics are excellent. There are no repeated notes. Wagner isn’t writing in a narrative voice that challenges the concept of narrative voice. No authorial intrusion. We’re just in the character’s head. Excellent work on all these points.
Saying the work is character-driven is too simple. The work’s constant beating heart is the main character is a better way to say it. This is a great novella. The Only Safe Place Left is the Dark. Warren Wagner.
The trailer for LESS UNHAPPY is out now.
A gay man and a lesbian get kicked out of the queer community for being too toxic and decide to try living as a straight couple.
A gay comedy with a straight face.

@LukasRidge@BogeyGuyC I believe they are doing the smaller categories first - shorts, web series, pilots - and the features will come later in the month/start of October.

This is the first year I’ve been able to vote in the WGA awards and while that was extremely exciting, what is even more exciting is I was able to vote for my favourite show @FROMonMGM in the preliminaries! Can’t recommend this show enough.
"The most difficult thing in the world is to reveal yourself, to express what you have to. As an artist, I feel that we must try many things—but above all we must dare to fail. You must be willing to risk everything to really express it all." Happy birthday, John Cassavetes! ❤️
