You will fail as a FARMER if you try this
Beginner farmer will see this and think yes this is the perfect for me .
if I grow like 10 different crops I will be mitigating my risk and not putting all my eggs in one basket.
After all they said putting all eggs in one basket is too risky.
Let me surprise you
Diversification sounds good on paper until you try it people ignore the reality behind it.
You donβt become profitable by doing everything at once.
You become profitable by mastering one thing first.
A farmer managing coffee, cocoa, bananas, vegetables, livestock, and fish farming simultaneously without proper systems already in place, without adequate labor and good labor management, and enough capital will easily end up average in all and profitable in none of them.
Diversification reduces risk, yes.
But over-diversification also increases:
- management complexity
- labor cost
- disease exposure
- operational mistakes
- capital dilution
Most successful large farms today became strong from one major cash-flow crop before expanding into other sectors.
The smarter plan will be to:
1. Build a strong primary foundation on one crop
2. Make it consistently profitable
3. Then diversify gradually using profits from the first venture
That way diversification becomes expansion, not confusion.
Or if you really want to diversify
Pick three crops
1. Main cash crop
2. Supporting crop
3. Cash flow crop that brings in money regularly for day to day running of the farm.
The fastest way to fail in farming is trying to know everything by yourself.
Recently, me and 4 other ginger farmers tested different selective herbicides from different companies simultaneously.
Everybody sacrificed a tiny portion of land for testing.
Within one weekβ¦
We already knew:
which one worked
which one stressed the crop
which one was a waste of money
and which company was just selling packaging.
Thatβs the power of community in farming.
Alone, it could have taken months of trial and error and a lot more money to figure out.
That small collaboration saved all of us from making expensive mistakes on large scale applications.
Some farmers see other farmers as competition.
I see them as data sources.
I know a lot of farmers like to move in silence.
But agriculture is one industry where the right network can literally save your season.
Find people growing what you grow.
Share information.
Share updates.
Share failures too.
Your farming circle matters more than people think.
One good farming circle can increase your profits more than another acre of land.
