Some of you probably wonder why a white guy with Dutch-Norwegian roots spends so much time on the Arab world. Why not Sweden, where I actually lives? Fair question. Sweden is easy. It has imported every type of Islamism the world has to offer, and the organized crime that comes with it. Without harsh reforms, it's a lost case! And since nobody in Sweden seems interested in bringing Swedish law into the modern, global world, I'd rather spend my time on what I believe in. Norway. The Arab world, and so on. So why the Arab world? Let me explain. I'm mostly Norwegian. I was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and a Norwegian mother. We moved to Norway when I was two, I grew up there, and I only left as an adult. I'm proud of both, but Norway is where my roots run deepest. And sometimes that Norwegian background lets me see something others miss. I don't see Bedouins as backward or stupid. Quite the opposite! We Norwegians were fjord people. Bedouins were desert nomads. Strip away the climate and the social DNA is strikingly similar. Both were shaped by scarcity, brutal landscapes, and then a sudden leap into oil wealth. A winter blizzard and a summer sandstorm pose the same threat. You lose your bearings, you're exposed, and you can die fast! That breeds the same values: practicality, fatalism, and respect for nature's limits. The old folklore in both places is about survival rules, not abstract philosophy. That is why Norway and Saudi Arabia both have such strong cultural identities... And as someone who loves my own Norwegian identity - I naturally respect and love other people with strong cultural identities- such as the Saudi's! Take hospitality. Bedouin karam obliges a host to give any traveler shelter, food, and protection for three days, without asking his name or business. Norway built the same idea into law and custom: allemannsretten, the right to roam, and DNT's self-service mountain cabins, stocked with food, dry firewood, and blankets for anyone who needs them. Neither society grew up under the rigid feudalism of continental Europe or the river-valley empires of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Nature was the only master. Survival depended on skill, self-reliance, and consensus among equals, not orders from a court. The traditional Bedouin sheikh was first among equals. He led through persuasion, generosity, and respect, not absolute power. Norwegian peasants were never serfs. The freeholder, the odelsbonde, answered to the local assembly, the ting, not to a lord. And both peoples still treat their harshest ancestral landscape as a sanctuary. Norwegians go to the mountains. Saudis go to the desert. And look at what beduins built! A hundred years ago, much of the Arabian Peninsula lived in tents. Today Saudi Arabia sits in the G20, and the Emirates have sent a probe to Mars. Now compare that to the countries drawn into Iran's orbit: Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen. Some of them were among the most advanced societies in the region. They ended up bankrupt, broken or at war! The difference was never IQ. It was leadership, and what you choose to build. So no, Bedouins don't have low IQ. You just don't know enough to understand them!
