Shortly after being crowned King of Macedon, Alexander the Great and his men were headed to a Greek assembly which would elect him leader of the campaign against Persia. Along their way, they walked past a naked, homeless-looking man, the philosopher Diogenes, lounging in a barrel, soaking up the sun.

“I am the ruler of the World; ask me anything you want,” said Alexander in a brief moment of lightheartedness.

Diogenes looked up and truculently replied: “Your shadow is disturbing my peace. Stand out of my sunlight.”

Alexander’s men were shocked. How could this man, who seemed to possess nothing, treat their leader with such ignorance and indifference?

Alexander paused, then told his men: “If I were not Alexander the Great, I would wish to be Diogenes!”

Moral of the story:
As a man, there are only two doors to true freedom in this life, unbound by any rules and without fear of worldly repercussions.

Either you gain so much power you are above everyone else. For a short or longer period of time, you become ruler of men, a wolf amongst sheep. Everything and anything is yours for the taking; you rain death and destruction on whoever stands in your way. Nobody can tell you “No” apart from God.

Or you intrinsically accept you are nothing, a nobody. Everything in this life is temporary; no belonging is yours to be called. No fear of loss, as nothing can be lost that isn’t yours to begin with. There is no rule over you, as nobody can rule over nothing. Death as the only certainty, God your only master.
