Beginning March 21st, masks are not required in @OCDSB schools, but wearing a mask is strongly encouraged for students and staff. Masks help to keep you and others safe from the spread of COVID-19.
A6: "If we want kids to attend to the multiple perspectives around them and listen actively and empathetically, we need to mentor them and show them how." Sara reminds us to be deliberate about modelling and teaching students how to listen and learn. #OttEdChat
A5: Sentence starters, examples of how to disagree respectfully. I've worked with many students who have a hard time accepting others' different opinions, so giving them the words to use in this case is important. #OttEdChat
Q5: In Chapter 2, Sara provides several ways to model active listening in your classroom. Please share one that speaks to you and explain why. #OttEdChat
A4: I feel far from an expert on this topic, and in a role where it will be more difficult to implement, but I'm going to try. It starts with looking for places to start these conversations with students, and encouraging staff to consider these ideas. #OttEdChat
Q4: On page 32, Sara writes, "There are few absolutes in social comprehension... So, I humbly as you to head into this work with a commitment to uncertainty." How do you intend to commit to uncertainty? #OttEdChat
A3: As a VP, I'm trying to think of all of the different places this could work! As mentioned in the book, identity webs may seem like a simple icebreaker at first (that can be used in english, french, and social studies). 1/2
Q3: Of the activities mentioned in Chapter 1 (Identity webs, Stories of our Names, Where I'm From Poems), which one will you try to implement sooner rather than later? Why did that one speak to you? #OttEdChat
@aanderson20@OttEdChat That's a great point! Interestingly, when guest teaching an OCV class, I found that the chat bar actually made it easier to engage the group in conversation because it seemed less intimidating for students to contribute. That was just one experience though....
A2: As part of the dominant culture, I have never struggled to feel visible, but recognizing that this is something many students struggle with all the time, I look for opportunities to invite and encourage students to share pieces of their identity. #OttEdChat
Q2: On page 2, Sara writes, "We have an obligation to make kids feel visible." Please share how this quote might impact your teaching practice. #OttEdChat
Hi I'm Murray, a secondary VP at Sir Wilfrid Laurier. As a sporadic participant in #OttEdChat, when I heard about this book chat, it gave me an extra push to get into a book I had heard about in many equity conversations.
@MrsSmithOttawa @KristaMcNamara @DeannaToxopeus An ASD lens will certainly add an interesting perspective. As a former LST, it's funny I hadn't thought of it that way!
Here’s what the research says about how teachers can enhance the learning experience in online classrooms. The first tip: Keep virtual classrooms organized.
