Vande Mataram

This was the first Independence Day celebration after the full Vande Mataram recital was made mandatory. I am afraid I am not sold on the new rule. Mandating the full six stanzas and marching every school ground through it doesn't deepen anyone's love for the motherland. It just sets most of the country up to fumble.

Before anyone offers it, I don't buy the argument that a certain community has religious grounds to sit this out. Their hardliners were wailing about Vande Mataram back when we sang only the two gentle stanzas, the ones about rivers, fruit and cool breezes. If the short, sweet, unobjectionable version was already an offence to faith, the objection was never about the four stanzas nobody had heard. It was about the two everybody had. That objection has been less a theological argument and more about a temperament looking for a grievance.

I love the whole thing and still admit that "hard to sing correctly" is an appropriate description, not an insult. So if you are preparing to declare war on me for being anti-national, do read the previous sentences once again. Hard to sing, for a child at least. I stand by that description.

Here is the actual problem. For 100 years, we sang two stanzas because they sing: sujalam, suphalam. It would roll off a child's tongue like a nursery rhyme. Only a lot more soulful. And nationalist. The other four stanzas lift the composition, bring in Bangla, thicken the Sanskrit, change metre without indicating, and suddenly the child who was doing nicely is three syllables behind and sinking.

Bankim wrote a poem inside a novel, not a cadence for morning parade. So the two groups who will trip up are an odd couple: the 9-year-old who cannot yet manage the metre, and the professional objector who was never going to try. Everyone else, the vast singing middle, would learn the whole thing happily but will inadvertently end up messing up the song that we are all required to respect. And any disrespect in this case won't be taken casually.

The two stanzas we actually sing were the two chosen in 1937, on the advice of a poet named Tagore, precisely so the song could unite rather than divide. The correction we make now to celebrate the song is, in plain terms, the undoing of an edit made by the man who wrote the anthem. You can come down heavily on me for dragging Tagore into his whole thing and blame it on WhatsApp University knowledge. But you know thay you, not I, are being difficult here.

A nation is not more devoted because its 10-year-olds can hit the harder consonants, and it is not less devoted because they cannot. Make the whole song available, teach it, print it, sing it at ceremonies where trained voices can do it justice. But mandate it into every school ground and you have only found a new and creative way to make children afraid of her.
