Nijboer ML @ 1.63 2U
Nijboer 2-0 @ 2.74 1U
McDonald is one of the weakest clay-court players on the tour.* Since 2022, he has won just 2 of his 23 matches on clay, while losing 12 consecutive sets. If we exclude Houston, which plays considerably differently from traditional European clay, the numbers become even more extreme: 0โ20 in sets and 21 consecutive defeats.
McDonald has barely played on clay this season and has recorded just one victory all year, making the matchup even more difficult given the conditions in Porto.
On the other side, Nijboer is a genuine Challenger-level player whose preferred surface is clay. He has come through qualifying and enters this match in excellent form, having won 16 of his last 19 matches, including several ITF titles this season.
The conditions also strongly favor Nijboer. The courts in Porto are expected to be slow after the recent rain, while winds of around 20 km/h should make it even harder to hold serve comfortably. On a slow, heavy clay court, rallies become longer and serve quality becomes less decisive โ exactly the type of match McDonald wants to avoid. This is not simply a matchup between two players with different clay records. The surface, current form and conditions all point in the same direction.
Iโm backing Nijboer to win, with the 2โ0 also very much in play. McDonald simply has not shown that he can consistently compete on this surface. His recent clay record is extremely poor, while Nijboer arrives with confidence, match rhythm and a clear preference for these conditions.
