Neuropathologist Bennet Omalu spoke to Vanity Fair about how Ye’s car accident contributed to his actions and how people with TBIs need empathy and not dismissal
“Omalu tells VF that following the publication of the apology, a friend of Ye's reached out to Omalu with photos from after the car crash, of Ye in the hospital and of his totaled vehicle. Omalu says the friend asked if the concussions and TBI that resulted from the crash could be responsible for Ye’s “progressive behavioral changes.” Omalu responded, “Most definitely.”
“I have watched him across the years,” Omalu says of Ye. “There is no doubt in my mind that the TBI he suffered was a significant and substantial contributory factor to his progressive behavioral and cognitive impairment regarding his impulsivity and lack of restraint on the public domain.” Because traumatic encephalopathy is “permanent and progressive”
“I feel his pain, and it makes me really sad,” Omalu tells VF. “I admire his deep talent.” Omalu encourages compassion for Ye and others impacted by traumatic brain injuries. “They need our empathy and sympathy and not our judgement and dismissal”
