Last week Mayfield hosted its very first Serious about Science event. Nursery showcased the gloop experiment, they used cornflour and water to create a non-newtonian fluid, this acted like a liquid and a solid atthye same time!
Year 1 created Hoop Gliders for the Science fair, They used strips of card and art straws to create fast moving air which flowed through the inside of the hoops, this is created a low-pressure zone, and allowed them to glide.
For our Science fair, Year 2 created their own lava lamps, they used recycled plastic bottle, water, vegetable oil and effervecent tablets. The hydrophobic oil moves away from the water to create the effect!
Year 3 were Serious about Science and created light boxes using paper and circuits! They used a blackout tent to make a dark space for the poweful lights to shine!
Year 4 used their topic learning about circuits to create a buzzer that would be pressed when you completed a circuits quiz! The volunteers where amazing at explaining the scientific principles to our guests!
For the Science fair, our year 5 pupils became slime experts! They mixed glue, shaving foam, contact solution, bicarbonate of soda and colour to create fluffy slime! this can be a great tool to improve fine motor skills!
Our oldest children, Year 6, used their knowledge and understanding of Newton’s laws of motion and experimented with rockets! They used water and air to create different propulsion methods.
Finally at the fair, we asked our community to vote for their favourite experiment, the votes are counted and verified, and this year’s winner is... YEAR 5! A huge congratulations to 5HS for being crowned winners! They will hold the coveted trophy until next year’s event!
For @ScienceWeekUK Year 5 have been exploring the chemistry behind making their own slime! They loved observing the reactions different materials had when they were mixed together. Look out for us at the ‘Serious About Science’ event this afternoon! 🧪👩🔬🧫
WOW!
We are so amazed by the incredible experiments each class have showcased at our Science fair this afternoon and by the overwhelming support you have shown by turning up in the masses!
We can't wait to see which year group will win the vote and be awarded the trophy! 🏆🧑🔬👩🔬
Our science fair will take place this Thursday at 3.30-4.15. Please come along and see the exciting experiments our children have been learning about and vote for your favourite!
For Diversity Day Nursery have learnt about Amelia Earhart. She was a brave piolet in a time when many women were not allowed to do adventurous jobs. She went on lots of flying adventures and was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She showed us that you can believe in your dreams and work hard to achieve them. We celebrate her life by decorating our own paper aeroplanes. ✈️
Thank you to everyone who attended tonight's phonics workshop it was a great success! Our Nursery staff will be hosting a communication and language workshop tomorrow at 3.30-4.15!
In Nursery Our Theme Week topic is How Things Grow and we have been learning about the life cycle of a plant. We act out growing from a seed into a plant and name the parts of a plant; roots, stem, leaves, flowers and talk about their functions. We have a garden area in our tuff tray and all plant a seed to look after at home.🌱🌻🥀
Year 3 finished this half term’s Science topic off with a visit from scientist, Mr Barlow. We were able to use the knowledge we had gained this half term about forces and magnets as well as explore how magnets can create flux lines. 🧲🧭
Our EYFS team will also be hosting a communication and language workshop next Wednesday 12th February. This is a great opportunity to see how our youngest children learn!
