🚨A dangerous amendment has been drafted in the Tennessee General Assembly that result in the death penalty for women who get abortions.

The amendment — sponsored by Rep. Jody Barrett, R-Dickson, and Rep. Mark Pody, R-Lebanon — attached to House Bill 570 and its Senate counterpart would alter existing homicide laws to count harms to fetuses the same as a fully formed child outside the womb. That means prosecutors could charge someone who obtains an abortion with fetal homicide — a charge that, under Tennessee law, carries penalties ranging from life in prison to the death penalty.

Right now, Tennessee already bans abortion from the point of fertilization, with limited legal defenses for doctors under specific circumstances, but the proposed changes would go further by removing explicit protections for pregnant patients and folding abortion cases into the state’s broader homicide framework.

The bill is still under review in committee and has not yet been scheduled for a vote.

State abortion law remains among the strictest in the nation, and this proposal reflects how extreme republicans have gotten when it comes to reproductive healthcare.
