To all my friends and the people of 𝕏, it's hard for me to ask for help but I need it now more than ever
This week, the love of my life spontaneously lost all hearing in one of her ears.
There was no injury or symptoms preceding this. No prior conditions. She just took out one of her AirPods and the next moment found herself profoundly deaf.
Doctors and the specialists she's seen still have no idea what happened. Scans & tests have been ordered but for the time being, we're in the dark and unsure of what the future holds.
My fiancé Meela is the most resilient, powerful & capable human being I have ever met. She has overcome tremendous adversity in her life all while being the type of person that makes yours better just by being around her & knowing she exists.
On Wednesday morning, she finally received her license to practice as a certified clinical counsellor after almost 10 years of academia and thousands of hours providing mental health care for at-risk youth, marginalized communities and those in financial need.
By that afternoon she was excited and proud to fully start her dream career as a therapist. By that night she was contacting clients & work to cancel upcoming appointments and worrying that she might not be able to practice or hear again should this somehow progress to her other ear.
I am deeply confident that Meela will heal from this, but I would be naive to not use my platform and every available resource & connection to help ensure & expedite her recovery.
What I am asking is that you share this, both publicly and privately to anyone who might be able to point us in the right direction for care.
We live in Canada and while grateful for free public healthcare, wait times are long, GP's are overworked, specialists are sparse and time is of the absolute essence as research suggests neuroplasticity can work to your disadvantage when healing from sensory loss if not effectively treated asap.
If you know any specialists, functional medicine practitioners, clinics, researchers or anyone well connected to leading healthcare professionals, please tag them below.
The current treatment plan has shown promise in past patients but that's assuming Meela has the same underlying issue, which right now is unknown.
She's currently undergoing 2.5hrs of daily hyperbaric oxygen therapy, followed by acupuncture, rest and hours of hearing re-training every day. We'll likely have to move temporarily as right now the only hyperbaric oxygen clinic is 3 hours from our home and the daily travel is adding stress and reducing how much additional treatment Meela can be getting.
If you're still reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The internet can be a beautiful, powerful place and it is my hope that one of you is able to help make a connection, suggestion and ultimately, a difference in the future of my fiancé's life.
I would do anything for Meela; travel anywhere in the world and pay whatever cost it takes to get to the bottom of this, ensure it doesn't progress and restore her hearing & health.
Thank you for your time and for any shares, tags, connections or help you might be able to offer 🙏
