We ask why newcomers have high truancy/dropout rates, low grades, behavior probs. They’re expected to fit in ASAP & be on track to graduate. Fitting in is already difficult for ANY student. Newcomers come with edu gaps, no family, no English, no support at home & more.

For some students, school is their safe place… where they receive consistent food, where they feel most successful, where they are surrounded by kindness and love, and where they can just be themselves. Faisal was in my newcomers class during 21-22 school year. Moved to another school BUT graduated last summer 🧑🏽‍🎓

Today, he’s graduating with AN AUTOMOTIVE CAREER AT NASCAR TECHNICAL INSTITUTE degree 🙌🏽🎓
