We ask why newcomers have high truancy/dropout rates, low grades, behavior probs. They’re expected to fit in ASAP & be on track to graduate. Fitting in is already difficult for ANY student. Newcomers come with edu gaps, no family, no English, no support at home & more.
Newcomer students to U.S. are among the fastest-growing population in Mass. high schools

Yet, the message I get from the article is that their focus is all in academics — when working with this cluster of Ss…FOCUS on belonging FIRST! https://t.co/PumV85idDe
“Add and pass” creative writing activity with my Spanish Language arts class was a success today! It’s always scary to try something new but I’m so happy we did!Gracias @SraArreola for the idea! 🫶
FUN Macromolecules review 🧬
I LOVE co-teaching with Ms. Cocherell 🤩
Check out the videos of this amazing & fun game to review macromolecules— we built community & learned too 😀

Our newcomers class is featured in our school’s 2023-2024 yearbook 🤩🙌🏽🕷️💛
Thank you to the fabulous yearbook team & our newcomers for being fantastic learners! #WeBelong#WebLife#NewcomersClass
In the remaining days of school, you may see some out of character behaviors from some students. Remember that not all students look forward to summer break. For some students, school is their safe place… where they receive consistent food, where they feel most successful, where they are surrounded by kindness and love, and where they can just be themselves. All behaviors are communication. Respond first with empathy and compassion. Thank you for everything you do for our kids! Have an amazing and well-deserved summer break!

#MedinaMondayMessage: Principals are key to the success of #duallanguage programs. If as a principal, we pass ownership of DL to an AP or a teacher leader, we inevitably linguistically oppress the emergent multilingual students we are charged to serve.
Awesomeness is when former newcomers return bringing great news.
Faisal was in my newcomers class during 21-22 school year. Moved to another school BUT graduated last summer 🧑🏽🎓
Today, he’s graduating with AN AUTOMOTIVE CAREER AT NASCAR TECHNICAL INSTITUTE degree 🙌🏽🎓
Proud! 🕷️
EL Level 2 had a great day seeing the Christmas trees from around the world and all of the exhibits at the @msichicago! We even got invited into a sneak peek of their newest exhibit which opens mid 2024! @PiratesofPHS#MyPalatine 🎄
Many times, my students hate the music I play in class. Today my EL students from Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala sang along to the song below. SO SPECIAL. So amazing to be an educator that shares my students’ culture 🫶🫶🫶 #latina#educator#eslteacher
