CMS students heard from a group of Twin Cities black professionals who shared how people in their lives have supported them and how different historical events have inspired them to be their best. Today’s Black Excellence Panel is part of Black History Month activities at CMS.

The kids coming to us are learners.
ALL of them.
We teach learners not labels.

If we believe otherwise, shame on us.

This was given to me by an 8th grader. On the back it said “To Ms Jones, Always Remember Me”. Working with young people is not always easy, but it is SO worth it. I get the privilege to support students every day. #relationshipsmatter

Some students come to school with a lot on them. Trauma, life, and just trying to figure out how to grow up. Some days just surviving the day is a victory for them, just like some days it is for adults. Relationship before rigor.

Effective teachers don't focus so much on rules, but more on relationships, routines, & expectations. If you focus mainly on rules, you will spend most of the year enforcing them. But if you focus on relationships, routines, & expectations, you rarely have to defer back to rules.
