I think its called smoke and mirrors when politicians won't pay teachers a livable wage or give them voice in how education is run, but blame them for all the woes of education and society. hmmmmm
It’s not just students who need Maslow. Teachers need:
1) feel safe / supported
2) emotional connection/ relationships
3) feel respected
4) appreciation
5) value within the team
6) autonomy/ flexibility
7) take time for self and family
Teacher effectiveness is not greatly improved by curriculum, new programs, or initiatives. But, when teachers are respected, valued, supported, & feel like their talents are utilized, then morale increases, job satisfaction soars, & teachers are most effective!
Often in education we are more focused on change than progress. The latest programs, newest gimmicks, or just adding more doesn’t mean progress. In fact it rarely does. Perseverance is important. We have to stick to what we believes works & then actually give it time to work!
Too many teachers are experiencing empath fatigue. Here’s 5 questions to reflect on for your own balance:
* is it my stress or other peoples stuff
* am I empowering or enabling
* am I sacrificing too much
* is my sense of purpose realistic or superhero level
* am I self caring
Teachers, if you interview for new positions, ask the admin questions too. What is their leadership style. How do they exhibit it? How do the improve morale, how do they support teachers? etc. If they can't or are uncomfortable answering these, ask yourself why?
