Question: should we teach reading with informational texts or narrative texts?
Filderman 2022 conducted a meta analysis on reading comprehension. Their study found double the effect sizes for informational texts when compared to narrative texts.
Aboud 2019 looked at brain scans of students while reading fiction vs non fiction texts. Their study found different areas of the brain were activated when reading different types of texts.
This suggests that while non fiction texts might be on average more important, we still need to teach a variety of texts in class.

The more I see the attempts to remove humanity from teaching by some who think it can just be covered with textbooks and desk work, I am going to hold on to this: "At its heart, literacy teaching is the teaching of what it means to be human." @NQCLiteracy is brilliant.
