Picture a 7 year old student doing independent work for 40 minutes, then working in a small group with the teacher, then back to doing independent work for another 15 minutes. How can we expect students to direct their own learning for so much time independently?

I understand states/districts have MTSS mandates, but please do not underestimate or devalue the impact of Tier 1 instruction. If you do, you have a bigger problem than how to schedule Tier 2 & Tier 3 support. We have to start with being clear on what we want Ss to know & do. IJS
