Wrapped up Frankenstein today in AP Lit by discussing common themes and connecting ideas using a Hexagons collaboration activity. So many great conversations! @AHSHighlanders#RCSLearn
#ahshighlanders Myths students tested their comprehension of Perseus’s hero’s journey by participating in a Question Trail activity that had them up, moving, collaborating, and competing this morning! #RCSpride
It was “circle time” in AP Lit today. Students focused on diction, contrasts, and characterization in fall-themed poetry, which they shared with their classmates. We’re focused on connecting small details to big ideas! #highlanderpride#RCSlearn
Congratulations AHS Class of 2021! Today was our AP Lit Farewell Day. We watched final retrospective projects, celebrated “wins”, and digested the poem “Aristotle” by Billy Collins. This is the end; it is also the beginning. I’ll miss you! #highlanderpride#ahshighlanders
If a student can turn in all work on the last day, what’s the benefit of class? Progression of lessons?
What do students gain from a class not captured in a grade?
Is there a way to reward students for these things?
I’m open to a variety of opinions - no set agenda here.
@mrsdanielsonAHS This is why I like being right next door! It makes it easy to visit and collaborate. Can you imagine the mountains we could move with dedicated collab time? 🤔
Jenga discussion of The Great Gatsby in #APLit today! Although you can’t see facial expressions well, the volume is loud, and there’s lots of laughter (amid the in-depth discussion)! This is what feeds my teacher-soul! Talking books among friends! #ahshighlanders#highlanderpride
It’s a beautiful day for poetry! Took my #APLit scholars outside to enjoy the sunshine, some #chocolove bars, and the poems hidden inside. All before they found inspiration to write a “love“ sonnet to their soon-to-be alma matter! #ahshighlanders#rcspride
@RHSFalcons@MrWrinkleRHS@rochcommschools I am so grateful for the poetry books that you’ve added to my classroom library! My AHS students are going to love them!! 📚
I love the use of the Literary 3x3 in analysis!! We just wrapped up Importance of Being Earnest and are working on drafting a Line of Reasoning. My #aplit scholars completed on-the-fly revisions for stronger word choice in finding the "big idea"! #ahshighlanders
On my way in to work, I pass this burnt out house every day but just noticed this effigy out front. Who has this kind of time? 😂 However, it gave me a good chuckle! Beware the Crowening! #SchittsCreek
Wrapping up the first week back in full population; it’s great to work with students IRL, but it’s also incredibly draining. We have 3 two-hour blocks per day. This week I only have 2 prep periods. It’s now the 5th shift of teaching modality this year (w/o training).
I’m tired.
*Society: Doesn't fund education, doesn't pay educators fairly, and criticizes educators often
*Also society: Quit if you want to complain
List of people willing or able to replace educators:
Isn’t it sad that teachers (professionals) have been conditioned to feel that getting their planning time and time to actually eat without inhaling it or being on duty is a treat. We have a long way to go to treat teachers like professionals.
Meeting kids where they are! For choice reading in #aplit, I asked students to create a #bookstagram flat lay & explain their visual choices. Students posted to a class Instagram page. #AHSHighlanders#RCSpride They are beautiful and my TBR pile is growing! Kids are amazing!
EXPECTATIONS FOR TEACHERS PRE-COVID:
Solve all society’s ills.
EXPECTATIONS FOR TEACHERS DURING COVID:
Solve all society’s ills in-person & on-line
Plus you may die.
Plus everything’s your fault.
Hospitals show health care workers who are exhausted and stressed and society rallies around them (as we should).
District pics of educators only feature smiling teachers because if we are shown to be overworked or stressed, society tells us to quit whining.
Why the discrepancy?
Six years ago I did a poetry event at a high school in Santa Monica, CA. When I was there I met a brilliant student named Amanda Gorman (front row third from the left). Six years later @TheAmandaGorman is the inaugural poet and completely blew the world away. She was incredible.
