Charlotte Fire mourns the loss of Durham Firefighter Andrew Brokes, who tragically died in the line of duty early Thursday morning, October 8, while searching for victims inside a burning building in Durham, North Carolina.
Firefighter Brokes, 24, joined the Durham Fire Department in May 2025 and was assigned to Fire Station 13. He was among the firefighters battling a large structure fire on Marly Drive when crews became trapped inside the building. Despite rescue efforts, Brokes lost his life. Two additional firefighters were injured during the incident and have since been released from the hospital.
Our hearts are with the Brokes family, the Durham Fire Department, and all those mourning this devastating loss. We stand alongside our fellow North Carolina firefighters as we honor Andrew's courage, dedication to service, and ultimate sacrifice.
#BREAKING: Multiple sources tell me a CMPD officer is being investigated by the feds for allegedly buying guns for a convicted felon. I’m told during a separate incident a suspect was arrested with guns which were traced back to purchase forms with the officer’s name on them.
CMPD tells me the officer has been on unpaid leave since Sept. 30th.
We are not naming the officer at this time since no charges have been filed. We are working to get more information. Updates at 5 & 6 on Channel 9
Well, this was certainly a first... our EDU Officers encountered quite the situation this weekend when they stopped two gentlemen traveling down S. Tryon Street on a couch... Yes, an actual couch. We had questions too. 👀
While we appreciate the creativity, we do have to remind everyone: no matter what you’re “driving” (using that term extremely loosely 😅), please think about safety first. Ask yourself: Should this be on a road… with actual cars… will the sheer shock of seeing this on the road cause other drivers to lose focus and drive unsafely? If the answer feels even slightly like ‘yes,’ maybe rethink the ride.
As a rule - probably best to leave the mobile furniture displays to IKEA. 💁♂️

@JoeBrunoWSOC9 Tiawana Brown served four years in federal prison in the 1990s for Social Security and felony fraud-related charges. She was sentenced to 33 months in 1993 but violated her parole, returning to a West Virginia federal prison in 1996.
BREAKING: Tiawana Brown sentenced to 10 months in prison for COVID-19 relief fraud. Her two daughters received probation. Judge Kenneth Bell said Tiawana Brown should have stopped her daughters from doing this and he said it was wrong for her to say this prosecution was political. More to come @wsoctv
