Campaigners are demanding an urgent end to the use of "brutal" snare traps that tighten around an animal's neck as it runs. ‼️

Wire snares work by tightening around the neck, upper body or legs of any animal that walks into them.

They cause immense pain and suffering, leaving victims to either die slowly or be shot by a gamekeeper.

The indiscriminate devices are set on large swathes of moorland used for grouse shooting to kill wildlife like foxes.

This is done to maintain artificially high stocks of grouse so hundreds of thousands of birds can be shot for sport.

UK government figures show up to 200,000 of these traps are active in England, though the true total is likely much higher.

Cruelty campaigners are urging ministers to deliver on their promise to ban the devices and bring England into line with Wales and Scotland.

"Snares are cruel and indiscriminate traps which have no place in a nation of animal lovers and should be consigned to the history books," said Emma Slawinski, chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sports.

"We welcome the government’s commitment to ban snares and call on them to act soon and introduce legislation to ban them in England and end the suffering and torment our wildlife currently endures."

Public anger flared in 2024 after footage emerged of a terrified fox trapped by its neck in a snare on King Charles' Sandringham estate.

An independent YouGov poll found 71% of people living in England believe using snares should be made illegal.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously pledged to tackle wildlife crime and cruelty on shooting estates.

A Defra spokesperson said the government is actively looking to bring a ban on snares into force as swiftly as possible.
