In the midst of my sadness about not getting to see my students again in person this year, I’m trying to get pumped about my next google classroom session on Wednesday. Thinking about starting off with a check in w/ folks cause we all have a lot of feelings.

Thankful for the option to mute my line and turn the video off during calls and virtual PD as the majority of the time I’m holding a baby in one hand and taking notes with the other. All while the other twins is yelling because I’m not holding them😩

Trying to give myself some grace as I struggle with balancing keeping 11 month old twins entertained, supporting the teachers at my school, and trying to check on students in this remote learning space.

I also think it takes time, patience, and trust for principals and teachers to show families that school can be a welcoming, fun, safe, and challenging place. And that takes mad DEI work to change our mindsets.

@CPSWatsonsClass I don’t know if I have any systems wide ideas... I do know that it takes leadership from principals and teachers at the school level. It’s critical to be a part of the community that the school is in & to invite our community in for things other than conferences and discipline

Once we reframe that question and our thinking around the answer, we can have honest conversations and begin with honest solutions that start with our mindset about parents and our treatment of them.

Most of the engagement is coming from the same kids who engage in class normally. There is a STRONG correlation between parental support and achievement & I’d argue it is directly correlated to motivation and work completion. Ideas on strengthening parental involvement? #systems

@CPSWatsonsClass Also, if a parent or family member has negative memories with school systems because of the way they interacted with them as children, what would make them feel differently about schools now? It’s a continuous cycle...

@CPSWatsonsClass When parents enter a building, how are they treated? Like equal partners who love their children and want the best for them? Or like a person who is prohibiting their child’s success because of where they live, the clothes they wear, how they talk, etc?

It’s a little to obvious to say, but school being out has me feeling weird. I’m fighting with conflicting feelings of gratitude that I get to hang out with my twins (pictured below☺️) and worry about what in the world my students will be doing for the next three weeks.
