When I moved to Mpumalanga to stay with my dad, he decided to rent a house close to my school. Weekends we’d go to Gogo’s place, but during the week, we stayed in that rented house.
Now, this house had +-20 hardbody chickens roaming around the yard, real rural vibes. Over the course of three years, we cooked and ate all of them. Every. Single. One. 🍗
Later I found out that the owner of the house used to live there himself, and he kept those chickens to make the place feel more like home. When he moved to Ermelo, he just left them behind.
Early this year, I bumped into him by chance, and as a joke I asked, ‘Bab’uMkhwanazi what happened to your chickens?’
He looked at me and said, ‘I know you ate my chickens, you bastard. You’ll repay me by marrying my daughter!’ 😭😭
That time, I don’t even know this wife i am being given. Who knew ilobolo could be paid with chickens you didn’t even buy? Turns out I’ve been paying ilobolo price one drumstick at a time! 😂😂😂
