We talked about how brave the helpers were—and how they were real-life superheroes for the people they supported. Students wrote in their journals about the Underground Railroad. Check out some responses below! Thanks @saidat2motivate for another great lesson!
Today, @saidat2motivate taught us about the Underground Railroad. Students discovered that it was not an actual underground train, but a safe network created by people of all races who worked together to help enslaved people reach freedom.
Our activity today focused on skin color and celebrating that all skin colors are beautiful. Thank you for such a wonderful message to start our first day, @saidat2motivate!
We began our #BlackHistoryMonth journey with @saidat2motivate this morning! Saidat taught us about how BHM came to be recognized in Canada - from Carter Woodson's work in the U.S. to the Ontario Black History Society and Jean Augustine, who officially established it in 1995.
We focused on primary producers today. Primary producers create their own food using photosynthesis, a process where energy from the sun and nutrients from soil or water are used to produce its own energy. ☀️ Then, students identified some primary producers very successfully! 👍
Today, in our habitat unit, students learned about the food chain. The food chain is a series of living things that eat one another so that energy flows from one level to the next. We learned that a food chain goes from a primary producer all the way to an apex predator. 🌱🦁
We had the MOST fun learning to curl with Rocks & Rings this morning! 🥌 Students had so many opportunities to throw rocks and learn how to score in mini games. I loved the opportunity to see students working so well together and cheering each other on. 🥹 What a blast!!!
We began a science unit on habitats this week. Yesterday, students learned what habitats are and about the different types of habitats. Today, we discussed what living organisms need to survive, as well as what would happen to a habitat that would make it unsuitable.
Students had some fun exploring geoboards this morning during the start of our new unit on symmetry. They learned that symmetry us when a shape has matching parts, as well as how to determine lines of symmetry.
@PresRoad celebrated #GreatBigCrunch today! The Great Big Crunch is a time to celebrate eating healthy foods at school by all taking a bite of an apple together! March is also Nutrition Month, so it's a great opportunity to discuss how healthy food helps us learn and thrive! 🍎🍏
We've been working hard on making predictions while reading this week. Today, we read the story "Enemy Pie" by Derek Munson. Students made predictions about what was going to happen when the Enemy Pie was eaten. Check out some of the fantastic predictions students made!
Its been a while since my last update! We've been working on solving addition/subtraction equations with unknown numbers and subtraction with regrouping this week in math. We've also been learning about synonyms this week. Do you know what a synonym for the word "chuckle" is?
Earlier this week, we created "zentangles". The Zentangle Method is a relaxing way to create art by drawing structured patterns using long, continuous lines. Today, students added hearts to their zentangles for Valentine's day! We chose either warm or cool colors for each heart.
Today was Winter Walk Day! Winter Walk Day takes place in February, as winter is a great time to walk outside. We had a lovely day for it. 🌞 My favorite part was when Mr. Comar had the students take a mindful moment and listen to the sounds around them. #connectingwithnature
Students made red envelopes this morning after learning about the tradition of exchanging red envelopes during the Chinese New Year. The red color symbolizes good luck, prosperity, and happiness, and the envelopes are symbolic of the giver's good wishes and the community spirit.
We followed up our #LunarNewYear lesson on the year of the snake with a fun directed drawing from @ArtforKidsHub. Check out these fantastic snakes students created! 😊🐍
This morning, we learned about the year of the snake. 🐍 Did you know that snakes represent good luck and rebirth, as they shed their skin? We also explored the animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar and learned which animal is associated with our birth years. #LunarNewYear
We then spent some time reflecting in the amazing women in our lives. Answers included women like our moms, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, teachers, inspiring Black women we learned about, and @saidat2motivate herself! Check out some of our answers. 🥰 #BlackHistoryMonth
This morning, @saidat2motivate taught us about inspiring women. One of the women was a Nova Scotian, Carrie Best, who founded "The Clarion", one of the first newspapers owned/published by a Black Canadian. She publicly supported Viola Desmond and brought positive change in Canada
