Exactly! Young kids are already seeing all around them how people are different and how hateful people treat them differently. It's important to have these discussions at a young age to nip it in the bud. #ElonEd

This is so important! Classrooms are a safe haven- they shouldn't be told that their skin/hair/language/home/family is better or worse than someone- outer spheres of society are already working around the clock to do that. #ElonEd

It's not enough anymore to recognize that people have implicit biases. We know that. It's about unpacking those biases and looking at people with a different identity as an asset to society, not that they're lacking something. #ElonEd

When @Gina4Lit talked to my #ElonEd students last week, she said being a teacher doesn't automatically make you an ally for racial justice. You have to earn that.

Don't expect students to respect or trust you just because you are a teacher. You have to earn it!

A3: Whenever I do service trips through Elon, we talk about the difference between "working FOR" a group of people and "working WITH" them. Community relations isn't a one way street, where we just teach and that's it- its about working WITH families! #ElonEd

A2: I think a lot of why many teachers struggle w this, especially if they’re serving in schools & communities they neither live in nor are from, is because they assume that power is rooted in their title (& not in relationships they hold with the adults in kids’ lives) #ElonEd

@mdawriter A2: I think many people think "classroom management" is by the wayside with Covid teaching. When I think its even more important to implement taking a second to listen to your students- instead of teaching at them! #ElonEd

I saw this a lot with the rapid transition to home-ish schooling due to COVID-19 this spring. Parents all suddenly realized that teaching is....a professional job that requires training!! What a concept! #ElonEd
