@OmarAlghabra@EllengalePS Thank you! It was wonderful to meet you. My class really appreciated the time you took to answer their questions so fully. We were excited to hear about environmental progress being made in transportation. You inspired us to help others, and show kindness whenever we can.
Always a pleasure to discuss with kids involved in their communities. Thanks to the class of 5th graders from @EllengalePS and their teacher Ms. Bowen-Cole for the great questions today!
Today is #OrangeShirtDay2020 commemorating 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children taken from their families & communities. The impact of colonialism continues. How can we each use our voices/platforms to honour Survivors & demand that rights be respected? @PeelSchools
The residential school system tried to destroy identities by preventing children from speaking their language. I’m proud When We Were Alone is now in Swampy Cree, my dad’s language. Reconciliation is healing & reclamation. They didn't & won't destroy who we are. #OrangeShirtDay
The orange shirt is a tribute to the lives affected and lost through the residential school system, which saw more than 150,000 Indigenous children and youth sent away from their parents beginning in the 19th century in Canada. #OrangeShirtDay#EveryChildMatters
Slide explaining my dads story & why #OrangeShirtDay is important 2me.From having a mom that attended #IRS,being removed in the #sixtiesscoop, reconnecting after 60 years,2 being strong & resilient in sharing his story. Dad & I wear orange shirts 2 honour survivors & those lost.🧡
When your class begs and demands you read this moving book by Phyllis Webstad. So proud of my class, they want to know, they want to be the change. #OrangeShirtDay#EveryChildMatters#EllengalePS
On a day to honour survivors of the residential school system, children who did not survive, and families who have been effected across generations, I think it’s also a time for reflection on not just the past, but today, and what kind of country we want to live in tomorrow. /1
