To say I'm disappointed in @weareCNTA and @CNUSD in their decision to force teachers to use Google Classroom instead of Canvas is an understatement. Yes, let's choose the far inferior system as our District LMS. Now let's go over all the new issues that Canvas has already solved:
@wendland_kevin Thanks for your input. In the case of our district, they are still going to pay for Canvas this coming year, they just dont want us to use it as our LMS. It's not a monetary issue, just a "one-size-fits-all" mentality they are trying to mandate.
@wendland_kevin Students dont need a code for Canvas Conferences, it's already built into the class. They just click join when they are in the classroom online. Teachers control it, and can choose who to invite. This includes parents enrolled as observers to their students in the class!
@wendland_kevin Our District doesn't use Aeries.
In fact, Canvas has the rosters integrated automatically and students are enrolled already, whereas Google they aren't. Students have to enroll themselves in GC for us.
@mrlanguagearts@ArigoTeach@weareCNTA@CNUSD Exactly. There should be a difference between lower grades and HS. We should be transitioning them and preparing them for college/career. At least, that's what we said our LCAP goal was, right?
@MrsLauraLarson I'm not anti-GC either, I definitely think it's a great starter platform for lower grades, especially for parents who have never used an online LMS before. However for HS I think they need to transition to something they will use in College, and that's Canvas.
@MsDeragisch@weareCNTA@CNUSD So many benefits to Canvas beyond what I said! I was just listing the new concerns that I've heard that we didnt have with Canvas. If I could list all the things I love about Canvas, it'd be way longer than this thread!
@NikkiSoriano00 @CNUSD I'm very surprised that the SpEd departments haven't voiced this exact thing! Not to mention I can add additional testing mods to students w IEPs on my Canvas quizzes. Standards are already integrated so we can align them to questions similar to the CAASP. But that makes sense🙃
@DobynsBrian It's not going away in that we still have another year in our contract so they are still going to pay for it this school year. But, how they worded the MOU states that GC is the platform we will be using all year district wide, no matter the grade level.
The fact that my year was GOING to start with me just copying my Canvas page from last year to my new Canvas class, which would have taken all of 2 minutes, and NOW you're saying I have to create a whole new course EVERY YEAR doesn't make me happy. Keep saying how GC is "better".
Everyone saying that Google Classroom is better and has more advantages has OBVIOUSLY never looked at Canvas. If you say GC is better organized and easier to access, I really want to know how your Canvas page looked because the MENU is on the left side of the screen.
This data shows that blackboard is a clear second place. I appreciate the teachers who voted for Google classroom. I see you, but it appears that not one college uses Google classroom. Students please reply and correct if I am wrong. Thank you all so much!
