I have been tutoring a kindergartener this semester.
When I first met him he claimed he couldn’t read or write.... then 2 weeks into tutoring him this funny little dude picked up my pencil and wrote any word I told him to and pointed out every word he knew in our book!

Although this is a celebratory tweet, it’s also a reminder that sometimes the “norm” doesn’t work for some students! Kids can feel pressure and it can stunt their growth as learners. Sometimes they need space and FUN to really experiment with concepts! 🥳🤓

For an assigned activity in my class- the student and I played with tops. I decided to once again use some sort of activity/manipulative to make my student feel less pressure on getting things right and more focus on learning! Lots of fun and thought of all the words himself!

In case my friends who are in classrooms don’t know- @lindzamer’s channel @queerkidstuff is a must have when writing lessons plans for LGBTQ+ topics (and many things in between)! Sometimes finding the right words can be hard- so having Lindsay sing them is even better!

So thankful to @JoKnowles for taking the time out of her day to come and speak to my class while also sharing some personal stories. It was such an eye opening discussion on “controversial books” and how important they actually are. Catch her on my future classroom’s shelves!

On a day where I could quite happily have walked away from my teaching career, a child approached me at the end of the day to give me a hand-made father’s day card because I’m the “only special, important grown-up man” she knew. I cried so hard.

it was such a cool experience to combine my two favorite things- teaching kids and sign language!

The students loved it and really learned a lot! Now if they ever meet a deaf person, they will know how to welcome them in a society that sometimes does not!
