@EForcione1989 That is such a fear I have for my own children. Iโm trying so hard to have them read daily but make it so itโs not a chore. They are loving graphic novels which is prompting my research focus! Give students the opportunity to read what they like instead of being told. #Summer6110
Check this out #Summer6110! Quick infographic on the importance of reading over the summer. It always hurts to hear students disengage with reading over the summer. Any ideas of how to mitigate this problem?

As I work on the upcoming literature review, this article has stood out for its unique perspective on the impact libraries have on legitimizing graphic novels. All educational partners have a role to play! #Summer6110
@hackmylearning Great find! This article really plays into creating cross-curricular materials. Maybe Math questions could include examples that incorporate in characters from a text being studied in the ELA? I suppose this where PLC time would be necessary and helpful! #Summer6110
Yes!! Many forms of curriculum do not properly align with visual literacy. Curriculum makers need to realize the legitimacy of graphic novels now. #Summer6110
There really is going to need to be proper attention paid to visual language fluency/visual literacy in the curriculum.
Weโre going to see more and more graphic novels, more highly illustrated texts, and books with shorter word counts in future.

@mme_ginette Wow!! It must have been such a rewarding experience to have the funds and opportunity to make such a big purchase. I hope graphic novels get the legitimacy they deserve so more funding can come to educators for purchasing power! #Summer6110
Check out the vast array of subjects that graphic novels cover. Students look for connections within the literature they choose to read. Letโs give them plenty of options in our class libraries! #Summer6110
Some of my fav books this last year have been graphic novels. They're diverse & thought-provoking while providing windows & mirrors. They provide access to experiences: friendships, life & death, family, survival, self-discovery... @ncte@ProjectLITComm
What's your favorite?
@MDevenUPEI Thanks for this article! A reflective piece for me. I am trying to increase the amount of informational texts in my classroom library & this article gives legitimacy to that attempt. ELA educators need to remember that traditional texts are not always the #1 pick. #Summer6110
@BrookeBoutilier Cross-curricular assignments for the win! Have you ever had the chance to do a joint project? I did this year and it was fantastic. The students really get invested when they know it impacts their marks across several classes. #Summer6110
@matarsenaul0 So exciting to see that youโre interested in gamification! I have plenty of research articles to send your way in the topic after writing my final M.Ed paper a few years ago on video games as legitimate tools of instruction. #Summer6110
@chandler_gupei@DrSunainaSharma Great article! I struggle with allowing students to use audiobooks but this article points to the abundant positives which is helpful for my practice. So great that graphic novels are once again vindicated from their negative reputation in this article too. #Summer6110
ELA teachers! Lately there has been a push towards excerpts as examples but check out this worthy read about the importance around reading texts throughly. Why We Shouldn't Teach Literature With Excerpts (Opinion) #Summer6110 https://t.co/NoTj5oGBo3
@BrookeBoutilier Love this, Brooke! I am always looking for new posters to put up around my room, especially those that are cross-curricular.
How cool would it be if students could visually see the importance of all of their courses and the impact they make as a collective unit!

Fantastic read about the potentials that graphic novels have for all classrooms. Itโs not just about literary & comprehension skills - Cross curricular projects can be created! ๐โ๏ธ #Summer6110
Words, lines, and colors all have a purpose in comics and graphic novels. Students can gain not only literary and artistic comprehension but also social-emotional skills. https://t.co/qUDCczPEKp
Yes!! The more I research about the need for graphic novels to be supported, the more I learn about the barriers they face to get into our students hands. Enough! #Summer6110
Reading a Facebook thread where teachers are taking away or banning graphic novels in their classrooms. Please remember that graphic novels are real books. Honoring student choice is so important. You never know who will become a reader when given the opportunity.
