We got done with our House on Mango Street chapters, and no one knew what double Dutch was. I thought it was important that we relate to the kids in the novel, sooo…a lesson!

The other day, a student said, “tell those kids to stop being gay.” The class froze to see my reaction. My stock response is, “We don’t use that word as an insult. Pick another word.” He tried a few equally offensive terms until he got to “weird.” The whole class clapped.
