@denikeoyetunde Are we hoping for a better system ? Yes. Health Insurance, Access to free quality respite care, Access to free therapies and inclusive education to mention a few.
At the end of the day, it's a collective responsibility to ensure the society is more inclusive for PWDs.
There's no support for people with disabilities in Nigeria." "None." Incorrect.
My son is a registered person with a disability in Lagos, under the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA). The Lagos State Governor has been incredibly supportive of the community.
Paying medical bills, empowering families, skills acquisition programmes, providing wheelchairs ,supporting homes for people with disabilities etc.
Look up LASODA and see the amazing work that has been done under the leadership of the ministry @denikeoyetunde .
@Obee_007 Donโt mind them. I wonder why the outrage isnโt about making society more inclusive, less discriminatory, with adequate resources to alleviate the struggles of families of people with disabilities.
Let them go to the child and adolescent mental health hospital and see.
Yes itโs so unfortunate. Itโs super easy for a fetus to become hypoxic during labor thatโs why we have immediate interventions to resolve them like turning the moms to the side, giving iv fluid bolus, giving mom oxygen, emergency c/s. We usually connect continuous fetal monitoring soon as mom enters the unit. Iโve spoken on how dangerous it is to deliver babies without continuous monitoring cos you donโt even know how baby is tolerating labor(a lot of babies donโt tolerate labor). Giving birth blindly with mom and baby coming out ok is by the grace of God.
Cerebral palsy isnโt something you detect in an anomaly scan. Itโs something that happens to a baby during delivery when thereโs oxygen deprivation or trauma.
So having 3 cerebral palsy babies is as a result of labor and delivery neglect. I understand the average Nigerian is not hip to these things but if you deliver at one hospital and your child has CP, donโt have your next baby there.
These are not the same situation. Not even remotely and I genuinely don't understand why people keep conflating them as though they're interchangeable scenarios.
Her body. Her choice.
In a world where women are often left to be the primary caregivers, they should be allowed the choice to decide. It's not that hard.
I remember some of these concerns were raised recently and parents/ primary care givers of persons with a disability were asked and the perspectives as expected were varying .
As a mom to a child with a Disability in Nigeria I know how deeply sensitive this topic is.
Again, this conversation is nuanced, and there isn't a clean answer to most of the questions raised. At the end of the day people are allowed to make their choices.
The couple did, their life ,their choice.
