For too many, Black presence is still viewed as something to intimidate, isolate, or control.

As America celebrates 250 years of liberty, Black Americans remember that much of those 250 years have been spent fighting to make the promises of freedom, equality, and justice apply to us, too.

Different Era. Same Struggle.

On September 4, 1957, 15-year-old Elizabeth Eckford walked alone toward Little Rock Central High School as an angry white mob screamed at her for exercising her constitutional right to an equal education.

Nearly 70 years later, another Black woman found herself sitting alone on public transit while surrounded by individuals reported to be attending a white supremacist demonstration.

The history is different. The legal landscape is different. But the images remind us why the fight against hatred, intimidation, and racism is not confined to the past.

Progress is real. So is the responsibility to confront hate whenever and wherever it appears.

The faces may change. The hate shouldn’t define our future.

Remember the past. Recognize the present. Commit to a better future.
