We closed out the week with an awesome long jump competition math task to determine which place each competitor got. It was exciting to see students work with a variety of digital tools and mathematical reasoning to help them make their decisions!
Today we had a great number talk discussing where we would put 0.75 on this number line! Students demonstrated lots of fraction and decimal flexibility by comparing values to 0, 1/2, or 1 and relating what they see to other fractions or decimals like halves, fourths, and sixths.
This week, we have explored different story elements through our read aloud of "The Other Side" and then the brainstorming for our own fiction stories. I can't wait to see the awesome stories that our class creates!

On this first day of second quarter, students had a lot of curiosities about the election, especially the electoral college. Today we analyzed a slow reveal graph and wondered what that 55 meant. Do you see the connection between the graph and the map? https://t.co/cl8snyo3qr
We are diving in deep with fraction decimal equivalents by using base ten blocks, decimal grids, and number lines to build a flexible understanding of how they are related. Today we focused on fourths. "It's like a quarter. A quarter is 25 cents and you need 4 to make a dollar!"
As we read "An Angel for Solomon Singer," students used evidence from the text to make an inference about how Solomon felt. We then used emojis to help visualize and justify our reasoning. Look at these awesome responses!
As we continue to explore decimal place value, students had to be creative and critical thinkers when trying to figure out how to represent decimals using a thousandths grid. There was tons of active collaborative and math discourse as students worked together to figure it out!
Socktober is on! Bring your new and gently used socks for drop-off in the bin outside our Lemon Road ES front door. Help support warm feet this coming cold season! Bins outside M-F 8am-6pm through October 30th.
Base ten blocks are a great, concrete way to help students visualize decimal place value. They used interactive Google Slides to build different decimals and reinforce their place value knowledge. What do you notice about the numbers with a 0 in a certain place value?
How many different ways can you show 0.77 on a hundredths square? "I could make my tenths up and down or side to side." "It doesn't matter how I color them in, as long as I color in 77!"
Distance learning may have its struggles, but some things stay the same! Students showed a love of reading today as we discussed their feelings about the ending of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Even virtually, it's so much fun to talk about books together :)
Get your virtual passports ready, because our fifth grade class is planning a *disaster* of a vacation -- on purpose! I can't wait to see what locations with a high risk of earthquakes and/or volcanoes our classmates decide to book their trips βοΈ
Happy Foreign Language Friday!
Today we practiced greeting each other in Tamil. We also learned we have a few native speakers in our class who were able to help us with pronunciation, which was very cool. A fun way to say 'good morning!'
Getting peer feedback is a great way for students to reflect on their writing and consider how they can make their stories even better. Today, students continued with their descriptive paragraphs from yesterday and made changes based on meaningful peer feedback. Awesome work!
We built on our observation skills by writing descriptive paragraphs based on a landscape photo. What do imagine you would smell, see, taste, touch, or hear if you were in this picture?
As we work on making observations about characters in our class read aloud, students have been sharing their thoughts using Jamboard. Check out all these awesome observations students made yesterday as we read The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin!
