Why do I call it “content knowledge” instead of ‘background knowledge’
‘Content knowledge’ implies that, once taught, all children can have the same knowledge base.
‘Background knowledge’ implies that some kids will have it, and some kids will not
“We don’t understand that comprehension IS in fact content. Children need content in order to comprehend. There’s an assumption that comprehension is a set of skills….” - @SusanBneuman#knowledgerichcurriculum
“If we’re not attending to the role of knowledge building and being more prescriptive about curriculum, are we actually having a science of reading moment at all?” - @rpondiscio#KnowledgeRichCurriculum
Let’s show our appreciation for those who shape young minds and ignite a love of learning. Nominate a teacher for a weekend retreat at @holdsworthcentr’s Campus on Lake Austin. https://t.co/5EIdCdV26A
5th grade summer school students at @DVISD_NCES using VR goggles to explore Mayan ruins on @nearpod!! They are engaged in a unit on “Ancient American Civilizations” - get this - for RLA! Why? Because building knowledge boosts comprehension! @HReneHedemann@DVISD_ELAR

So proud of @DVISD_GES summer school teachers and students! Our @DVISD_LITERACY team developed summer school curriculum that enabled students to design and follow their own research topics: building content knowledge, inquiry and research, AND strong literacy skills!

A great read for those trying to understand how the banning of three-cueing in HB1605 & HB2162 impacts the kind of reading instruction we should be providing our students! https://t.co/aV4ArfVZfd
@DVISD_NCES@nearpod@HReneHedemann@DVISD_ELAR Not sure about building knowledge through cross-curricular, thematic units? 'Thematic' references the idea that students spend wks on 1 topic. They still run the gamut of RLA TEKS w/in that unit! Check out the research: https://t.co/Qnz3gYuCzG
“Readers are very likely to notice a word they don’t know… [or] if the grammar of a sentence is wrong. But they are much less likely to notice when two sentences contradict each other.” Thought-provoking read! @HReneHedemann @AshleyFredo https://t.co/XkzowVNHiZ
As teachers close out another school year where they prepared students for a STAAR redesign, coached students through active shooters drills, spent countless additional hours lesson planning and grading, and provided love and care to 20-150 students, districts have to say #txlege failed #txed. Districts are finding ways to provide 2-4% pay increases when we should be able to do more. Educators are feeling discouraged and defeated.
Public Ed didn’t even make the priority list for the first special session.
Despite a $33 billion budget surplus, the session has ended with no increase in the basic allotment and no rasies for teachers. https://t.co/uovGQQA33d #txed
