"the water is dark and the trees are dark too because they were getting cut down and the water was going away. It's a sad story because people were cutting the trees down"
I invited kindergarten students to find a story with loose parts materials today. I was so impressed with how they represented their thinking. Here are some of their stories!
"Me and my mom went to the beach. The sky was dark because there was a storm. That (the dark stones in the top right) is smoke because there is a forest fire. The butterflies are staying in their houses to be away from the smoke"
@nobleknits2 @mrslyonslibrary @AngelaStockman @kindyfriends This one was a yard sale find. It was the third one I came across when I finally got the inspiration!
@kindyfriends Here are the current contents, but I am excited to play around with them. Today I learned the seashells might have been too prescriptive ... Lots of beach stories. Curious to see what happens if I swap them out. I will share some pics of the children's stories soon!
@CommissoLisa @DECEMentorship@HCDSB_k@Antonie21622315 Hey! Can you tell me more about this program? I'm always looking for new ways of building capacity with our educators!
This is another tool I use often and recently I had a lot of success with a student who was struggling to blend and segment. You can also write on these tiles. I posted this and other activities & info on my IG account too. @SoRclassroom@UFLiteracy https://t.co/z8Vfjt9KK6

As we are bombarded by literacy “activities” on social media (I should try that! And that!) this is a really important reminder from the front matter of Morphemes For Little Ones by Deb Glaser. Keep it simple.
Or in the words of Anita Archer: “Teach the stuff and cut the fluff.”
So much amazing learning today at #RFTLOI2023! Loving the focus on why play and inquiry belong in Kindergarten. My heart is feeling full and my brain is bursting with new ideas! @DianeKashin1@H20sD#1aday4play
