3rd Grade, Title 1 Teacher in South Carolina. Working intentionally to make my instruction meaningful, engaging, and inclusive. ALL ARE WELCOME. She/Her
By pulling books written by people of color, @Scholastic you are taking away voices and stories that can resonate with the 87% of the students at my school who look like and who share similar life experiences with those authors.
So disappointing. 87% of students at my school come from diverse families and backgrounds while only 37% of the books at our @Scholastic book fair (in our media center this week) have diverse characters on the covers.
How are we to expect our students to make personal connections and grow their love of reading when the stories they are given access to do not reflect them or their life experiences?
This week students learned how to think critically about the world around them. They read articles on the pros and cons of zoos, watched videos, and visited a zoo to help further their understanding. Students then formulated their own opinions afterwards. #engagedeagles
Test prep has begun this month! Students have been grouped based on reading level. They read through a passage for 5 minutes each day to build fluency and familiarity with the new vocabulary and questions are answered on Friday. Students are engaged & enjoying test prep this way!

Room 225 had an indoor Snow Day! Students learned about the Science of snow, we read about the first man to photograph snowflakes, designed our on snowflakes, and used area to design our own winter parks! Iβd say this transformation was a success! @gcschools@GroveElementary
Thank you so much to @nchurnin and @womenshistory for reading Dear Mr. Dickens to us and answering all of our questions! I have a class full of book lovers and writers that were so engaged and learned a lot! What a great day @GroveElementary#engagedeagles
