Pay attention everyone. This is the challenge: The conflating of teaching reading and the science of reading with being only about “phonics”. Educate yourselves, friends. Every teacher is a reading teacher. That includes fluency, word study (vocabulary), and comprehension.
And thats a wrap on grad school! Shoutout to all the people who made this possible by covering my class at dismissal, making food, bringing coffee, checking in and cheering me on—this was a community effort and you will never know how grateful I am for each of you! 🎓🤘🏼❤️
HB 3979 (SB2202) will get a floor vote in the House Tuesday. They threaten social studies education & prevent schools from using private $$ (like grants) to buy curriculum materials.
Contact your Rep. MONDAY, 5/3 & tell them to OPPOSE THESE BILLS.
Texas is experiencing a humanitarian crisis.
People are burning furniture to heat their homes, melting snow to flush their toilets, risking carbon monoxide poisoning to protect their children.
If Texas was a country, we would call it a “failed state.” #txlege
Today’s workshop mini-lesson:
“Writers, we’ve been talking about our important job as illustrators. Why is illustrating important to book making?”
“Because we are writing to change the world and people need to hear our voices in our pictures.”
Couldn’t of said it better 👏🏼
Today I filed HB 1246 to fund our schools based on enrollment & not attendance.
Texas is one of just a handful of states to fund schools based on attendance & not enrollment. We have seen during this pandemic that our funding model short changes our kids.

Straight from the mouths of kids—With each turn this year we’ve had to ensure our agreements are still purposeful. Looking at these I’m reminded that no matter the shift we remain rooted just the same in: joy, justice, advocacy, and community. Grateful to be part of this team❤️
I love that this starts with the assumption that teachers are going to do everything in their power to help their students and families. School leaders support students by supporting teachers. Student-focus vs. adult-focus is a false choice.
