On #EarthDay, we took some time to clean up our community. We hauled A LOT of neighbourhood garbage. Good job, Grade 5! Could not have asked for a better day. 🌎☀️
It’s been a busy and productive week! We’ve been learning how to write the GIST of selected texts, and students proudly shared their narrative writing. In Social Studies, groups collaborated to create their own political parties and develop party platforms. #StudentVoice#Grade5
Ss had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of autism. Ms. S. shared imp. facts and led a simulation activity to help Ss better understand the kinds of supports some individuals may need. It was a meaningful experience that encouraged empathy, awareness, and inclusion.
Today, students examined the floor of the Ontario Legislature and recorded their observations. Tomorrow, we dive into Ontario’s ridings and what those seats really mean. #Grade5#Civics#OntarioGovernment#SocialStudies
Ss used cards to show their current understanding on which level of gov't is responsible for certain issues. Then they added their findings to our gov't anchor chart.
Today we sorted roles and responsibilities across different “levels” in a school community: principals, divisional teachers, and classroom teachers. This helps students see why jobs are distributed and makes it easier to connect to how different levels of government work. #civics
Students continued their work on revising their narratives today. They had two tasks: add a simile or metaphor, and include 2 vocabulary words that we studied this year. When we come back from the break, they will be ready to publish. 📝
Ss are in the revision phase of their narratives. They were instructed to choose a part of their story that could use more descriptive details. Using the organizer from our descriptive paragraph unit, they used AI to generate rich words (adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and nouns).
Today we launched our Social Studies unit by reading “The Composition” and discussing the characteristics of a dictatorship. It's a powerful way for students to begin thinking about the rights and freedoms we enjoy in a democracy.
Ss worked together to share ideas and advice on "sizzling starts" for their narratives. They had a choice of 6 different ways to begin their stories. #BeyondOnceUponATime
Students began building their structures in science today. Lots of discussion on how to make their treehouses stable enough to withstand the forces I place upon them.
"Trees" are prepared for our treehouse STEM project for our forces unit. #GorillaGlue will help these trees withstand the forces put upon them. Treehouse pictures will be posted as soon as they're done! #Grade5#Science#STEMEducation
Students worked together to read a story and map it on a plot diagram—building an understanding of story elements they’ll use in their own writing. #NarrativeWriting#Grade5
In the morning, Ss worked on breaking up multisyllabic -LE words. In science, they learned about the centre of gravity and were "blown away" when a pop can was able to balance on its edge when a little water was added. #science#grade5
Using anchor charts, Ss brainstormed adjectives, adverbs, and strong verbs for a picture prompt (descriptive writing unit). Once they brainstormed 3 words each, they used the computer to get more specific, descriptive words. Looking forward to seeing their initial paragraphs!
Yesterday, we worked on our partner reading to improve fluency. Ss also had an opportunity to present their science projects (inside/outside circle). Finally, they learned about stacked bar graphs in math.
In preparation for our partner reading/repeating reading fluency practice, we read Wolf! to discuss the qualities of a good reader. Ss were extremely perceptive about the journey Wolf made to become a proficient reader. They also noticed the support he received to reach his goal.
