Anthony P. Crawford was a Foundational Black American born in 1865 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA. He was a successful Black farmer who owned significant land holdings, totaling 427 acres. Crawford was known for his activism and independence, often standing up for his rights against anti-Black Racism.
Tragically, Crawford’s life came to a violent end on October 21, 1916, when he was lynched by a white mob. This brutal act of racial violence stemmed from a dispute with a white customer who was trying to lowball Crawford's price of cottonseeds. Despite being released on bail for cursing at the white customer, Crawford was abducted by the mob and lynched at a nearby fairground. The perpetrators of this heinous crime faced no legal consequences.
In the aftermath of Crawford’s lynching, his family faced further persecution. The white residents of Abbeville voted to expel the Crawford family from the area and seized their property. Fearing for their safety and lacking protection from authorities, many of Crawford’s surviving relatives were forced to leave the land or be killed.
According to his children, Anthony Crawford once stated, “The day a white man hits me is the day I die”
