A tiny white dwarf's final, glorious act, captured by the Webb Telescope.
This stunning image from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) showcases the Southern Ring Nebula, also cataloged as NGC 3132. It is a prime example of a planetary nebula, which, despite its name, has nothing to do with planets. Instead, it represents the beautiful and final stage in the life of a star like our Sun. For thousands of years, the star at its center has been ejecting its outer layers of gas and dust. Now, at the end of its life, the core has collapsed into an incredibly hot and dense white dwarf, which acts as the power source for the entire spectacle.
The process that causes the nebula to glow so brilliantly is known as photoionization. The white dwarf unleashes intense waves of ultraviolet radiation that travel outwards, striking the atoms within the expanding gas shells. This high-energy radiation energizes the atoms, causing them to light up in distinct, vibrant colors. This phenomenon is further complicated by the fact that the nebula is a binary star system. The brighter star visible near the center is actually a companion that is not responsible for creating the nebula.
The two views presented in the image were captured by different instruments on the JWST, each revealing unique details. The image on the left, taken by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), highlights the intricate, filamentary structures of the hot gas shells. In contrast, the image on the right, from the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), pierces through the cosmic dust to reveal the dual-star system at the center with unprecedented clarity. MIRI's view also distinguishes different layers of gas and hydrocarbon-rich dust, offering a more complete picture of the nebula's composition and structure. Together, these images provide a comprehensive look at the death of a star, offering a preview of our own Sun's fate billions of years from now.
