When I was a kid our neighbor used to host traditional ceremonies once or two times a year. They brewed traditional beer and slaughtered a goat or two.
They sang and danced traditional songs the whole night and all the neighborhood kids and adults were allowed to join in. We sat inside their tiny living room and ate goat meat, sang and sometimes danced isitshikitsha.
One of our neighbor’s daughter who had a calling got into a trance and started talking in a deep male voice (Ukhulu). An elder in the family told us to leave because it was now family business. (Sekufuneka umdeni kuphela)
We all left the room very fast… I remember one time she threw her nduku in our direction, coz we were a bit slow to leave.
After a few hours we were called back in to eat and drink, sing and dance.
Dear Zimbabwe,
after dancing and eating with us (Bulawayo sons and daughters) please go and wait outside as we talk to Mayor David Mlungisi Mdevara Coltart.
We will call you back in singaqeda.
