Muhammad Hijab is clearly twisting the Islamic texts here, and unfortunately nobody from an Islamic background was there to call him out. I am. So let me expose exactly what he did.

First, he quoted Qur’an 5:32 as if Allah were commanding Muslims not to kill innocent people. That is simply not what the verse says. Read it:

“That is why We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever takes a life-unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land-it will be as if they killed all of humanity…”

FOR THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.

The verse is telling Muslims what Allah had prescribed for the Jews. Hijab knows Arabic. He knows exactly what the verse says. Yet he presented it in a way that makes a Western audience think this is a command being given directly to Muslims. Why leave out the most important part?

Second, he did the same thing with the Hadith. Muhammad did NOT say, “Whoever kills a non-believer will not smell Paradise.” The Arabic says:

مَنْ قَتَلَ مُعَاهَدًا

“Whoever kills a mu‘āhad…”

A mu‘āhad is not simply “a non-believer.” It is a non-Muslim who has a covenant or protection from Muslims. That qualification is right there in the Arabic, but Hijab conveniently erased it.

Islamic law historically divided non-Muslims into different legal categories. A protected non-Muslim was not treated the same as a non-Muslim considered at war with the Muslim polity (like the Jews in Israel). So you cannot take a Hadith specifically about killing a mu‘āhad and dishonestly sell it to a Western audience as a universal statement about killing “non-believers.”

This is the game: quote half the verse, soften the terminology, remove the uncomfortable qualifications, and suddenly Islam sounds exactly like modern Western liberalism.

No. Give people the actual Qur’an. Give them the actual Hadith. Give them the actual Arabic terminology.

Then let them see what the texts really say.
