UPDATE: 🚨 URGENT ACTION: FEAR OF REFOULEMENT IN KENYA
The case of Mustafa Güngör, arrested with his family on Saturday 20 December, requires international attention. While the family has been released, @AmnestyKenya @GlobalPeaceKeny and @LawSocietyofKe remains deeply concerned by the continued detention of Mr Güngör, educationalist and registered refugee.
We have reliably learnt the Turkiye authorities sought his arrest through a Mutual Legal Assistance request to office of the Attorney General. Kenya has an obligation under international law not to return anyone to a country where they face persecution or harm. We call on the @DCI_Kenya and both authorities to:
✅ Respect the legal principle of non-refoulement
✅ Ensure due process and protection for family
✅ Allow continued access to legal representation and @Refugees and @Kenyajudiciary

Amnesty International is deeply concerned that Mustafa Güngör who was arrested with his wife Zeliha, daughters Seniha Betül and Zeynep, and his in-laws Zümrüt and Salim is at serious risk of refoulement to Türkiye, where he could be subjected to arbitrary detention, torture, or ill-treatment. We have reliably learnt the Turkiye authorities sought his arrest through a Mutual Legal Assistance request to office of the Attorney General. Kenya’da yeni bir kaçırma vakası: Uluslararası Af Örgütü eğitimci Mustafa Güngör için çağrı yaptı

Kenya’da Birleşmiş Miller koruması altındaki eğitimci Mustafa Güngör, Türkiye’ye iade edilmekle karşı karşıya. Uluslararası Af Örgütü, Kenya makamlarına "Hukuka uy" çağrısı yaptı.

AKP hükümetinin yurt dışındaki eğitim gönüllülerine yönelik hukuksuz girişimlerine bir yenisi eklendi. Türk büyükelçiliğinin talebiyle Nairobi hükümeti, Kenya’da eğitim hizmetleri yürüten Mustafa Güngör’ü gözaltına aldı.

Edinilen bilgilere göre olay şöyle gelişti: İlk olarak 7 kişilik polis ekibi, önceki akşamı Mustafa Güngör’ün 6 yıl önce oturduğu ikametgaha geldi. Güngör ailesinin adresten taşındığını tespit eden ekip geri döndü.

20 Aralık 2025 cumartesi akşam saatlerinde, Mombassa şehrinden trenle başkent Nairobi’ye dönen Mustafa Güngör, istasyonda gözaltına alındı. Eğitimci Güngör, Terörle Mücadele Merkezi’ne götürüldü.

Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage has deferred a ruling on the @DCI_Kenya @ODPP_KE application to hold Mustafa Güngör for 15 more days to allow further investigations until Tuesday 30 December 2026.His family, friends and @AmnestyKenya @LawSocietyofKe @GlobalPeace lawyers and representatives argued in court that the extended pre-trial detention is excessive. Mustafa is a recognized refugee resident in Kenya for over 15 years without a criminal record. He has fully cooperated with the @DCI_Kenya since his 20 December arrest. Court has further ruled the father of two, Mustafa Güngör remain in custody, with family visitation and be produced in court for a ruling on 30 December. We shall be there.
