🚨 JUST IN: Medical interns are standing firm: no reporting without their concerns being addressed.

This follows the Uganda Medical Association’s call for an Emergency Extraordinary General Assembly (EOGA) tomorrow, 11 August 2026, to agree on a collective response to Government’s decision on the fate of internship in Uganda.

The message is clear: interns deserve dignity, clarity and a fair agreement.

Cabinet, the country is watching. Do the right thing.

We need to make government know and understand that medical interns are a top prioty. There will be sacrifices like some patients dying because of interns staying away from health facilities but it will be worth it in the long run. Even not all NRA cadres made to victory celebrations in January 1986. Let all interns be paid by givenent. It's the least government can do.

Medical interns are not students. They are graduates of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBCHB). Internship is one year period that prepares them to become registered as professional doctors. During internship they do the actual work doctors do but under supervision. They must be paid. We should not support discrimination. It's time for medical interns to stand together till the end. Some matters require discussion and negotiation and not intimididation or threats. Let interns be heard. Let @Uma_Oficial be given an audience with the President of Uganda just like he has met teachers and university lecturers in the past. This matter is so important not to be swept under the carpet.

New twist in medical interns’ funding plan

The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has criticised the Government’s position, saying discriminating against interns based on how they financed their education is unfair and will ultimately hurt patient care. UMA president Dr Frank Asiimwe said all interns perform the same work regardless of whether they studied under government or private sponsorship.

Just In Today, A few things to highlight before parliamentary sitting tomorrow ❗️

Medical interns are not students. They are qualified Medical Doctors on probation, working under supervision as they complete the apprenticeship required before full licensure. Medical internship is not comparable to ordinary professional training,it is the bridge between graduation &independent practice.

We work full nights, long shifts, weekends and attending to emergencies,resuscitating critically ill patients, stabilising mass casualty victims and helping reduce preventable deaths in an already strained health system hence reducing mortality.

Uganda already faces a severe doctor shortage compared with the WHO-recommended benchmark of 1 doctor per 1,000 people. Interns are therefore not excess labour; we are part of the workforce keeping hospitals running.

If Government requires us to undertake this mandatory apprenticeship, then let it be humane and sustainable.

We ask for a UGX 4 million monthly allowance, secured through a signed contract before deployment, so every intern knows the terms under which they are expected to serve.

We are not asking for luxury.
We are asking for dignity, a fair contract and the means to survive while saving lives.

Tomorrow, we ask Parliament to stand with Uganda’s young Doctors.
