@CasMudde I've been on this (and the lack of a 'rural strategy') for over 15 years. Social-democrats are reluctant at realizing that conservatives had churches as social infrastructure for free, like SD-s had unions, but SD-s didn't react to the demise of unions ( = loss of infrastructure)

@CasMudde Thanks for all you’ve done to help the academic & semi-specialized public better understand populism and far right in lib dem. I very much look forward to soccer & politics columns; I’ve always thought & read about that as a guilty hobby & thought there’s more to it. I’ll learn

@jasonintrator Populists & fascists also, and correlatively, woe culturally (perceived, stipulated) majoritarian parts of the precariat on behalf of economic elites to split them off & turn them against those below (the dependent working class) to win in electoral democracies. It’s a clamp move
@jasonintrator The other end disaggregation within the dependent precariat b/t the really left behind (working class) and those perceiving threat of having something to lose (petite bourgeoisie) is equally important for explanatory and strategic reasons (the econ & cultural non-elite, resp’ly)
Joseph Raz 1939 - 2022
As many have already heard, my father Joseph died in his sleep yesterday morning, Monday 2nd May.
I have delayed posting while contacting people affected. I have found comfort in the many tributes and reminiscences of his life sent to us or posted online.
@jasonintrator Everyone is easily against fascists, but to warn people against populist de-democratization requires picking them up in their belief they’re defending democracy or ‘the (real) people’ and to show them where it leads (1-party cultural majoritarianism) and ask: that’s democratic?!
@jasonintrator Both, fascist and populist ideologies, are in fact anti-democratic, but only one of the two is programmatically so, the former. The latter is attractive to electorates in liberal democracies precisely because it’s not. Calling out this seduction requires a more specific critique
@jasonintrator I disagree, as you know. Calling populists fascists is unwise because it gives them the opportunity to show that they, given their anti-dictatorship and non-opposition-illegalization platform, are better democrats than their critics who try to disqualify them with “lies”.
