Not saying I disagree with everything, but I'd like to weigh in. I'm American, my wife's Chinese. We live in China and have two young daughters.
I grew up going to school 8am-3pm, like most Americans. I played basketball, Pokemon cards, and had sleepovers on weekends. My parents limited us kids' TV to 8 hours a week (as spendable tickets).
In middle school, my wife was in class from 7am-8pm. She got to go home for dinner, but basically kids' life was entirely just school. She wasn't an exceptional case -- she lived in a normal family, in a small village.
Nowadays, kids here start school at 3 years old. Our neighbor is an adorable 7 year old girl, who's up past 10pm just to finish her homework every night. She'll be doing that till she's ~24. Her mom hates it, but this is what's expected. Kids are heavily discouraged from having boyfriends/girlfriends till they've finished college. Life is school, then work.
My wife and I don't plan on putting our daughters through that system. At some point we'll move. We want them to have childhoods, like I had. Personally, I don't think it's worth turning our kids (by that I mean all kids, yours too) into robots as a baseline, just to enter the rat race at square one. I applaud hard work work, tireless devotion -- and high achievers SHOULD be rewarded, but it's depressing to think of that being the norm for ALL kids. Obviously too much TV or whatever's bad, and a balance needs to be struck, but let's not sell off our kids' childhoods for the sake of competing.
If that kinda thinking means we'll stay lower-middle class, fine. If others feel the same way, and that leads to America not being the #1 superpower in the future, so be it imho. There's more to life than grinding till you're dead. Especially for kids. You only get one childhood.
I never talk politics online but this is more personal than political, so I allowed myself the exception. Just my two cents.
@percytrailer Even knowing fan requests are usually ignored, a while ago I sent an email to @StephentheVoice requesting that he consider the role. As a kid I always imagined Blackjack with the voice of Barbas from Skyrim, I think that accent and cadence would be perfect for the character
@Demilogic Always wondered, why doesn't the table requirement for houses include all crafting stations? I feel like making unique houses would be more fun if I didn't have to shove a regular table in there instead of other crafting stations which have a more fitting theme
@AndrewHutton@hankgreen Assuming you haven't had your DNA analyzed, YOU don't know if you are an XY male or not. Many never know.
Regarding identities: society already DOES cater to thousands of identities. If you can learn a new name and call someone by it, why throw a fit over the word "they"?
@AndrewHutton@hankgreen I acknowledge that most people are XY male or XX female, and they are highly correlated. But that doesn't mean we can discount the minority, and that includes not just intersex but also people whose genitals or hormones don't match their sense of self.
@AndrewHutton@hankgreen There are two types of genetalia. But those two types are not mutually exclusive, and can each appear in many of the 6+ different sex chromosome combinations.
Socially, people are more than their reproductive abilities, and should be free to separate themselves from reproduction
