@scaredycat102@matthew_petti The PKK and Turkey peace talks were mired with bad faith on both sides but once it became clear that Erdoğan wasn’t interested in honoring the Dolmabahçe agreement they started making absolutely insane demands as a means to stall lol.
@scaredycat102@matthew_petti At the time Turkey was overseeing peace talks between the PKK and themselves. They actively encouraged some of these meetings. They had ilham Ahmed and Salih Muslim at red carpet events in Istanbul.
@scaredycat102@matthew_petti Probably true, but it augured poorly for the Kurds that a majority of the diaspora intelligentsia were not willing to even throw them a fig leaf. At that time it was thought the SNC had a chance to receive weapons and Nusra would eventually be co-opted or crushed by “moderates”
@scaredycat102@matthew_petti This doesn’t just include the PYD though. ENKS at that time also was involved in negotiations. It’s true the PYD already had connections to Assad and began using them at certain points to their advantage. Ur also right about the FSA but they were talking to the SNC.
@scaredycat102@matthew_petti This isn’t untrue but the Syrian opposition’s reaction to Kurdish overtures was either hostility/apathy. The PYD starting making deals with the Assad regime to consolidate power around this time and still sought strategic alliances with FSA factions up until Aleppo’s conclusion
@matthew_petti Everyone loves bringing up their “betrayal” in Aleppo but they also love omitting that they were lobbing chlorine gas in Sheikh Maqsoud and the sporadic alliance breaking by both sides
@NotWoofers I think the STG making the ceasefire’s stipulations purposely vague was an excuse for them to advance constantly. If there an Arab village two feet outside of Kobani they could enter it without violating the “ceasefire.”
@Beanyboy710 The actors who made up the former Syrian opposition have gotten much better at media ops and propaganda since 2011. I stg they have a whole cadre of foreign and domestic journalists who spew their preferred narrative with alacrity.
@h_zahn__ The president of Kosovo was answering questions about gay marriage legalization at the UN a few years back and they had a mic there. I stg they’re everywhere for some reason but all they report on is Kurdish affairs. They’re just happy to be there
Syrian Arab Army has been carrying out drone attacks on the Kurdish town of Çil Axa.
The objective is clear: seize the city & cut the route between Qamishli, western cities, and the Iraqi Kurdistan border crossing.
Sêmalka border crossing is a lifeline for millions of people.
@CKIIIEnjoyer@VivaRevolt@CdricLabrousse I’m not in on the “ISIS” army thing tbh. There are religious extremists but a lot of these types are colored by Arabism. The SNA was a much larger force than HTS.
@CdricLabrousse I think the vague nature of the ceasefire is a tacit admission that they’re done negotiating and will slowly, village by village, crush the YPG.
@CdricLabrousse If the SDF, with the little leverage they have left cannot squeeze out anything more than individual integration I cannot imagine they’d peshmerga Roj—a particularly irrelevant organization that saw little to no combat inside syria—would be given a much better hand.
